The single most useful thing to understand about Avios is that it is not a Finnair currency, or a British Airways currency. It is a shared currency that several programmes happen to use, and it moves between them almost freely. Once you see your balances as one pool of water in different buckets, a lot of the strategy falls into place.

Six programmes, one currency

Avios is used by British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus, Vueling and Finnair. Points move between them at 1:1, in any direction, usually instantly. Finnair links directly to British Airways, and from BA points can flow onward to the others, so in practice BA acts as the central hub of the network.

The mental model. Treat "Finnair Avios" and "BA Avios" as two buckets of the same water.
