Avios vs tier points: the two currencies in Finnair Plus

Every airline loyalty programme has to keep score of two fundamentally different things: how much you can spend, and how important a customer you are. Finnair Plus is no exception. It gives you an Avios balance and a tier-point balance, and treating them as one pot is the single most common beginner error. Get the distinction clear and everything else in the programme makes sense.

Avios: the currency you spend

Avios is your money-substitute. You redeem it for reward flights, cabin upgrades, extra baggage and partner products. It behaves like a wallet. The one thing it does not do is affect your status: no matter how many Avios you hold or burn, your tier does not move as a result.

Avios is also a shared currency rather than a Finnair-only one. It is the same points used by British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus and Vueling, which has consequences we will come to.

Tier points: the currency that buys status

Tier points do exactly one job: they move you up the elite tiers, or hold you where you are. Silver sits at 15,000, Gold at 45,000, Platinum at 80,000. You cannot spend tier points on anything. They are a score, not a wallet, and the score decides whether you get into a lounge, board early and carry an extra bag.

On flights, they arrive together at 1:1

Here is the design detail that makes Finnair unusually easy to plan around. When you fly, you earn Avios and tier points at the same rate, in the same transaction. Bank 10,000 tier points from a flight and you also bank 10,000 Avios. There is no separate scale to reconcile, no conversion in your head. One flight, two balances, both moving by the same amount.

The mental model: two scoreboards. A single flight feeds two independent scoreboards. The tier points march you toward your next tier; the Avios pile up to fund your next trip. Plan a year of flying well and you can simultaneously reach oneworld Emerald and finish with a six-figure Avios balance to spend.

A quick illustration. Suppose one long-haul flight credits 16,900 tier points to your account. That same flight deposits 16,900 Avios. The tier points carry you toward your next elite tier. The Avios sit in your balance, transferable and ready to fund a future award. You have not chosen between status and points. You have earned both from one booking.

Where the two currencies part ways

They are earned together, but their rules diverge sharply once they are in your account. Three differences matter.

Expiry

Avios lapse after 18 months of inactivity, but almost any activity resets that clock, even a small transfer in or out. More usefully, holding any status above Basic exempts your Avios from expiry entirely, and points in a Junior (child) account never expire at all. So reaching even Silver quietly switches the expiry problem off.

Tier points work differently. They do not sit in a balance waiting to expire; they count toward a tier within your tracking period, and then you requalify (or drop) at the end of it. The risk with tier points is not expiry but falling short at renewal.

Portability

Avios are portable. Finnair Avios move to and from British Airways at 1:1, instantly, once you link the accounts, and from BA they can flow onward to Iberia, Qatar, Aer Lingus and Vueling. Treat "Finnair Avios" and "BA Avios" as two buckets of the same water. If another programme prices a redemption more cheaply, you shift the points there and book. Avios you earn almost anywhere, including from credit cards that have no direct Finnair link, can be funnelled in.

Tier points are the opposite. They are locked to Finnair. There is no transferring status credit between programmes, which is exactly why crediting the right flights to the right programme matters so much.

Conversion: the one bridge between them

Normally the wall between spendable points and status credit is absolute. Finnair is one of the rare programmes that lets you cross it: you can{' '} convert Avios into tier points at 3 to 1, once per membership year, capped at half your current tier's requirement. Because Avios are cheap to acquire, this can be a cheaper route to status than flying for it, and it is the reason "buying" your way toward a tier is possible at all. It is the only bridge, and it runs one way, from Avios to tier points.

What earns each one

This is where people quietly waste effort. Both currencies come from flying, on Finnair and on oneworld partners alike. But away from the aircraft, the two split:

• Hotels, car hire and shopping earn Avios but no tier points. They top up your spendable balance and do nothing for your status.
• Credit cards (outside Finland) earn Avios you move into Finnair, again with no status credit.
• The only non-flying route to tier points is the Finland-only Finnair Visa card, plus the Avios-to-tier-point conversion above.

The takeaway is blunt: if your goal is status, only flying and that one conversion lever move the needle. Pouring hotel and shopping spend into your Avios balance builds a bigger wallet, not a higher tier.

Putting it to work

Keep the two scoreboards separate in your head and a few decisions get easier. Plan your status around flights and the conversion lever, never around partner spend. Build your Avios balance wherever it is cheapest, then consolidate into Finnair when you need it. And remember that every qualifying flight is doing double duty, so a year designed to reach a tier is also, for free, a year that funds your next premium redemption.
