How to convert Avios into Finnair tier points

Most programmes keep a wall between the points you spend and the points that earn status. Finnair puts a door in it. You can convert Avios directly into tier points, which turns a cheap, easily acquired currency into the one that unlocks lounges and priority. Used well, it closes status gaps for far less than flying. Used carelessly, it wastes half its value on timing.

The mechanics

The rate is 3 Avios to 1 tier point. There is a small handling fee (around €10 online, more by phone), a minimum of 500 tier points per exchange, and one hard limit: you can only do it once per membership year. The conversion lives on the Finnair Shop, on the exchange-Avios-to-tier-points page, rather than the main site, so it is slightly hidden.

Why it is usually cheaper than flying

Avios are cheap relative to what a tier point costs by flying Finnair's own metal. Bought in a sale or via a boost, Avios can cost somewhere around a penny each, which puts a converted tier point at roughly 3 to 4 pence. Earning that same tier point by paying for Finnair-operated flights costs a meaningful slice of base fare. On a pure cost-per-tier-point basis, conversion is often three to five times cheaper. Wherever you can substitute converted Avios for flown tier points, you save money.

The cap scales with your current tier, and that sets a trap

The most you can convert depends on the tier you hold{' '} at the moment of conversion. It is, in effect, half of your current tier's requirement.

Here is the trap. Convert early, as a Silver member nudging yourself toward Gold, and you spend your one annual conversion on the smallest allowance (7,500). You then cannot convert again until the next membership year, so the much larger Gold allowance (22,500) is off the table this cycle.

The efficient sequence. Fly your way to the higher tier first, then convert the larger allowance toward the next one. Reach Gold by flying, and only then spend your annual conversion buying 22,500 tier points toward Platinum. From there, a modest amount of further flying, or one more partner return, can carry you over the line.

The buy-status promotions

Periodically Finnair runs an Avios sale with a tier-point kicker: a representative recent promotion offered a 50% bonus on purchased Avios plus an outright grant of 10% of the purchase as tier points, on top of your normal conversion. Pandemic-era versions were more generous still, handing over 25% as tier points, which is how some people effectively bought oneworld Emerald for around £2,000 without flying. When such a promo runs, the maths can be compelling, but the cap logic still bites: from a standing start as a Basic or Silver member you can only convert 7,500, so a from-zero sprint to Emerald usually needs you to already hold Gold, or to bridge the gap with a little flying. Treat buying status as a top-up or requalification tool, not a from-scratch shortcut.

One practical warning on paying: purchased Avios are handled by a third party and do not code as airfare, so you will not earn travel-card category bonuses on them. Route the spend through a card where you are chasing a sign-up minimum, and check foreign-transaction fees, since you will likely be billed in euros.

One exclusion

Converted tier points do not count as "earned on Finnair flights," so they cannot help toward the 250,000-Finnair-metal requirement for Platinum Lumo. For every tier below Lumo, they count fully.

Tactics

• Save your annual conversion for the biggest useful cap. Do not burn it reaching Gold; use it at Gold to buy toward Platinum.
• Convert instead of flying the last stretch whenever a status gap is small enough to close that way.
• Watch for kicker promos, not just Avios bonuses. A 50% bonus with a 10% tier-point grant beats a bigger bonus with no kicker, for status.
• Do not buy Avios speculatively. Only when you have a defined target.
