The JAL trap: great for Avios, poor for Finnair status
Japan Airlines looks like one of the best oneworld partners on the earning chart. For Avios it is. But its tier points run on a separate, much lower scale, and planning a status run around it is a costly mistake.
Written by
Richard VinerRead the top line of Japan Airlines' earning chart and it looks like a big-three earner: a business fare can earn 250% of distance, first class up to 300%. If you are hunting status, that is exactly the sort of number you want. Except those figures are the Avios rates. JAL is the one partner where Avios and tier points come apart, and the tier-point side is far less generous than it first appears.
Where the two currencies split
On JAL international flights, Avios earn richly across the premium cabins. Tier points, though, are awarded on a separate scale that depends on your current status, and it is much lower until you are already at the top:
| Your current status | Tier points earned |
|---|---|
| Silver | 25% of distance |
| Gold | 50% of distance |
| Platinum / Lumo | 100% of distance |
So a JAL business fare that earns 250% in Avios might earn just 25% in tier points if you are a Silver member. That is a tenth of the status credit for the same flight, and even at Platinum you only reach 100%, still well short of what the big three deliver in the same cabin.
The trap, stated plainly. JAL is an excellent way to earn Avios and a poor way to build status unless you already hold oneworld Emerald. Never plan a status run around it. Do consider it for topping up your Avios balance, where its rich earning genuinely shines.
How to use JAL well
- For Avios: fly it happily. The premium-cabin Avios earning is among the best in the network, so JAL flights you are taking anyway are a strong way to build a spendable balance.
- For status: credit it, but do not rely on it. If you are close to a threshold and already high-tier, the 100% tier-point rate at Platinum is fine. Below that, the numbers do not stack up, and your status flights belong on British Airways, American or Iberia.
A related point: non-oneworld partners
The same "Avios yes, status no" logic applies, more bluntly, to non-oneworld partners. LATAM is the notable case: you can still earn Avios on it, but nothing toward status at all. As always, the marketing carrier governs, so you only earn on such partners when the partner's own code is the marketing and operating carrier on the ticket.

Frequently asked questions
Is Japan Airlines good for earning Avios?
Yes. JAL international business earns up to 250% of distance in Avios, among the best in the network, so it is excellent for building a spendable balance.
Why does JAL earn so few Finnair tier points?
JAL awards tier points on a separate scale tied to your status: 25% at Silver, 50% at Gold and 100% at Platinum, far below its Avios rate.
Should I fly JAL for Finnair status?
Only if you already hold Platinum (Emerald). Below that, the tier-point earning is too low, so keep status flights on BA, American or Iberia.
Do non-oneworld partners earn Finnair tier points?
No. Partners like LATAM earn Avios but nothing toward status, and only when the partner's own code is the marketing and operating carrier on the ticket.
