Booking class and flight numbers: the two traps that halve your tier points
A ticket sold to you as business class can quietly earn half the tier points you expected. Two details on your booking decide how much you earn, and both are easy to miss until the points fail to arrive.

Miss either and a flight you booked for its earning can pay out half of what you planned, or in the worst cases almost nothing. Neither is complicated once you know to look. Both are invisible if you do not.
Trap one: the marketing flight number, not the operator
What decides your earning method is the airline whose flight number is on your ticket, the marketing carrier, not the airline whose aircraft you actually board. This matters because oneworld airlines sell seats on each other's planes under their own flight numbers.
The Helsinki to London route is the textbook case. Finnair operates the flight, but sells it under both a Finnair (AY) number and a British Airways codeshare number. Buy the AY-numbered "prime" flight and you earn on{' '} spend. Buy the BA-numbered version of the identical flight and you earn on distance. Same plane, same seat, very different tier-point outcome. Always check which flight number your ticket is issued under before you assume how it will earn.
Trap two: the booking class, not the cabin
On partner flights, the distance percentage is set by the fare's booking class, a single letter, not by the cabin name printed on your boarding pass. The split inside business is sharp. On British Airways, American and Iberia, business classes J, C and D earn 250% of miles, but the deeper-discount business classes R and I earn only 150%.
So it is entirely possible to buy something described to you as "business class" that quietly earns 150% because it booked into R or I. Cheap sale business fares are exactly where this happens. The cabin is the same; the earning is a third lower. Economy is worse still, collapsing to 50% or even 25% in the cheapest classes, with some earning nothing at all.

How to check, in two clicks
- Confirm the ticket is sold under the partner's own number (BA, AA or IB), not a Finnair (AY) codeshare, if you want distance-based earning.
- Read the booking-class letter off the e-ticket or confirmation and check it against Finnair's chart for that airline. If it is R or I rather than J/C/D, you are earning 150%, not 250%.

A rule that changed: June 2025 codeshares. Until mid-2025 you could buy cheap partner flights sold under Finnair codeshare numbers and earn on distance. From 3 June 2025, Finnair-marketed codeshares switched to spend-based earning. To earn on distance you now need the flight sold under the genuine partner's own flight number, which is exactly why trap one matters so much.
