What Are Avios Worth? An Honest 2026 Guide

Draft body.

An Avios is worth roughly 1p as a baseline, but that number is only a starting point. The real value can range from around 0.5p to more than 5p per Avios, depending on how you redeem them.

A 50,000 Avios balance might be worth £250 if used poorly, or £2,500 if used well. The points are the same. The difference is what you exchange them for.

The better question is not “what are my Avios worth?” but “is this specific redemption a good use of them?”

How to Calculate Avios Value

The formula is simple:

Value per Avios = (cash price avoided - taxes and surcharges paid) ÷ Avios spent

For example, a return Club World flight from London to New York might cost around £6,000 in cash. The same flight as a reward might cost 176,000 Avios plus £399 in taxes.

(£6,000 - £399) ÷ 176,000 = 3.18p per Avios

That is a strong redemption.

Now compare that with a return economy flight to New York. If the cash fare is £514 and the reward costs 66,000 Avios plus £120 in taxes, the calculation is:

(£514 - £120) ÷ 66,000 = 0.6p per Avios

That is below the usual benchmark, so paying cash is probably better.

Important Checks Before You Calculate

The cash price must be a fare you would genuinely have paid. Comparing a reward booking against an expensive fare you would never buy can make the value look misleadingly high.

You must also include taxes and surcharges. Reward flights are not free.

Avios Redemption Benchmarks

Redemption Cash Price Avios Needed Taxes Value Verdict
LHR to JFK Economy Return £514 66,000 £120 0.60p Poor
LHR to JFK Club World Return £6,012 176,000 £399 3.19p Strong
LHR to JFK Club World with Companion Voucher £12,024 88,000 £798 5.92p Exceptional
LHR to Cape Town Club World Return £5,125 198,000 £499 2.34p Strong
Madrid to JFK Iberia Business Return £3,200 81,000 £250 3.64p Exceptional
LHR to Barcelona Club Europe Return £450 30,000 £75 1.25p Good
Upgrade from Premium Economy to Club World £1,400 37,500 £0 3.73p Exceptional
Avios Shop Purchase £229 39,500 £0 0.58p Poor
Avios Hotels Booking £180 36,000 £0 0.50p Poor
Nectar Conversion £15 3,000 £0 0.50p Poor

The pattern is clear. Premium-cabin flight redemptions usually deliver the best value. Non-flight redemptions often sit around 0.5p per Avios.

What Your Avios Balance Is Worth

Avios Balance Baseline Value Realistic Range
1,000 £10 £5 to £30
10,000 £100 £50 to £300
25,000 £250 £125 to £750
50,000 £500 £250 to £1,500
100,000 £1,000 £500 to £3,000
200,000 £2,000 £1,000 to £6,000
500,000 £5,000 £2,500 to £15,000

For example, 100,000 Avios used in the Avios Shop might return around £580 of value. The same balance used toward a Companion Voucher business-class booking could return closer to £3,000.

Why Premium Cabins Deliver Better Value

Premium cabins usually give the best Avios value because cash fares for business and First Class are expensive, while reward pricing is often more controlled.

The strongest redemptions usually have four things in common:

  • Long-haul route
  • Business or First Class cabin
  • Off-peak travel date
  • Companion Voucher where possible

Adding a Companion Voucher can roughly double the effective value of your Avios because two passengers can travel for the Avios cost of one.

How Surcharges Reduce Value

Taxes and surcharges can make a big difference to the value of a redemption.

A London to New York Club World reward might carry around £400 in taxes and surcharges. The same type of flight departing Madrid on Iberia may carry closer to £100 to £150.

That difference can significantly improve the value of your Avios.

This is why routes through Madrid, Dublin, or Helsinki can sometimes stretch your points further than routes departing directly from Heathrow.

Check All Avios and Cash Options

British Airways often shows several payment options when booking a reward flight. These combine different amounts of Avios and cash.

The default option is not always the best value.

For many routes, the option using fewer Avios and more cash gives better value. New York can be an exception, so always compare every option before booking.

Converting Avios and Partner Points

Avios can be used across several programmes, including British Airways Club, Iberia Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, Vueling Club, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Finnair Plus, and Loganair.

Transfers between most Avios programmes are usually 1:1.

Amex Membership Rewards to Avios

American Express Membership Rewards transfer to Avios at a 1:1 rate. This makes many Amex cards useful for building an Avios balance.

Nectar to Avios

Nectar points can be converted into Avios. This can be useful for turning supermarket spending into travel points.

Avios to Nectar

Converting Avios into Nectar usually gives around 0.5p per Avios. This is convenient, but poor value compared with premium flight redemptions.

Hotel Points to Avios

Most hotel point transfers to Avios offer poor value. Marriott Bonvoy is usually the least bad option, but hotel transfers should generally be a last resort.

Are Avios Losing Value?

Yes, gradually.

Airline loyalty programmes change over time, and reward prices can increase. That means Avios should not be treated like savings.

They are best seen as points to use for a specific redemption, not something to hoard forever.

If you find a strong redemption worth 3p or more per Avios, it is usually worth booking rather than waiting indefinitely.

FAQ

How Much Is an Avios Point Worth?

About 1p is a useful baseline. In reality, Avios can be worth around 0.5p on poor redemptions and more than 5p on excellent premium-cabin redemptions.

What Are Avios Points Worth?

Avios are worth the cash price they help you avoid, minus any taxes and fees you still pay, divided by the number of Avios used.

How Much Is 1,000 Avios Worth?

At the 1p baseline, 1,000 Avios are worth about £10. Used poorly, they may be worth around £5. Used as part of a strong premium-cabin redemption, they can be worth £20 to £50.

What Is a Good Avios Redemption?

Anything above 1.5p per Avios is good. Anything above 3p per Avios is excellent. Anything below 1p should usually be reconsidered.

Should I Use Avios or Pay Cash?

Use Avios when cash fares are high, especially in business or First Class. Pay cash when fares are cheap, especially on economy routes where taxes and surcharges reduce the value of your points.
