The basics

How the BA Companion Voucher works

1

Earn it

Spend £15,000 on a British Airways American Express card in a card year. The voucher lands in your British Airways Club account.

2

Book on ba.com

Search Reward Flights for two people in the same cabin on the same flights, then apply the voucher at payment. British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus flights qualify.

3

Pay Avios once, cash twice

One person's Avios covers both seats. Taxes, fees and carrier charges are still due for each passenger.

4

Fly out before it expires

Premium Plus vouchers run 24 months, the fee-free card's 12. For Reward Flights the outbound has to be flown, not just booked, inside that window.

Dates

British Airways peak dates

Everything outside these periods is off-peak. British Airways fixes the dates in advance rather than pricing dynamically, so the day you fly is worth checking before you commit a voucher — a shift of 48 hours can be worth tens of thousands of Avios in a premium cabin.

Peak dates in 2026

  • 1 Jan – 4 Jan
  • 12 Feb – 22 Feb
  • 27 Mar – 12 Apr
  • 21 May – 31 May
Timing

Will your voucher outlive the seats you want?

Reward seats go on sale about 355 days ahead, and for a Reward Flight you must have flown the outbound before the voucher expires. Those two dates decide what you can realistically book.

Find it under Membership → your vouchers in your British Airways Club account.

Add your expiry date and we'll show the window you're actually working with — including whether the dates you want are even on sale yet.

Quick reference

Companion Voucher cost by destination

Two seats, return from London, using maintained off-peak Reward Flight pricing. Avios are the voucher total for both passengers; cash is the combined taxes, fees and charges.

What a Companion Voucher does and doesn't cover

Works for

  • British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus Reward Flights booked on ba.com
  • Any eligible cabin, including First, with a Premium Plus voucher
  • Bookings that start outside the UK for eligible newer vouchers
  • Solo travel, taking 50% off the Avios instead of adding a second seat
The other way to use it

Voucher on a BA Holidays package: 25% of your Avios back

If two reward seats never appear, British Airways may let you put an eligible voucher against an Avios booking with BA Holidays instead, with a portion of the Avios returned. Check the current terms before relying on this option.

No reward seat needed

A package can sidestep the two-seat reward inventory constraint entirely.

Useful for larger groups

Package availability can be more practical when finding several reward seats is unrealistic.

Different timing rules

Package voucher terms differ from Reward Flights, so verify the booking and travel deadlines.

The trade-off can be substantial: price the Reward Flight and package options independently, then confirm the live BA Holidays terms before applying the voucher.

FAQ

Companion Voucher questions

You book an eligible British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus Reward Flight on ba.com and apply the voucher at payment. Two people travel for the Avios one person would normally pay. Taxes, fees and carrier charges are still payable for both passengers, who must travel in the same cabin on the same flights.

Knowing the price is half the job

The hard part is two reward seats on the same flight, before your voucher runs out. Create a free account and keep the route and timing plan together.

Value is measured in pence returned per Avios spent, against a typical cash fare for the same seats. Anything above 1.5p is a strong redemption; under 1p usually means the voucher would work harder on a different trip. Confirm live prices before booking.

One-way as well as return, though it uses the whole voucher either way

    Doesn't work for

    • Partner airlines beyond British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus
    • Cash tickets — this is a Reward Flight benefit
    • Two different cabins or two separate bookings
    • Premium cabins on the fee-free card's voucher
    • Travel after expiry: the outbound must be flown in time
